On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we cordially invite you to participate in the 6th Asia Pacific EPR/ESR Symposium which will be held in Cairns, Australia from 13-18 July 2008 and promises to be an exciting conference. This is the 6th in series that has taken place since 1997 (Hong Kong) and subsequently in 1999 (Hangzhou, China), 2001 (Kobe), 2004 (Bangalore) and 2006 (Novosibirsk). APES has a wide reach to nations on the Pacific rim, particularly from Asia (China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, India, Vietnam), Russia (particularly Siberia including Vladivostok), Australia and New Zealand) and also from other parts of the world including the USA and Europe.
APES 2008 aims to address all aspects of EPR/ESR ranging from theoretical and experimental advances in CW EPR/ESR, pulsed EPR, high frequency and high field EPR, ENDOR, time resolved EPR, FMR, EPRI, CIDEP and ODMR to applications in medicine, biology, chemistry, materials science and nanotechnology. We envisage sessions in the following areas:
- High resolution EPR
- High field EPR
- Metal ions, free radical and their roles in disease
- Metalloensymes
- Advanced materials
- Macromolecular materials
- EPR imaging in medicine
- Dynamic nuclear polarization
- Spin labelled proteins - distance measurements
- Quantum chemistry and simulation - towards structure determination
- Photochemistry radiation and the application in medical therapy
- Multi-functional nitroxide spin traps
- Detection of radical in biological systems
- Quantum computing
- Organic and inorganic molecules
The scientific program will involve a mix of plenary, invited and session lectures as well as two poster sessions to enable the dissemination of the latest results in the development of EPR spectroscopy and the application of EPR in the fields of physics, materials (solid state and polymer) science, chemistry, biochemistry and medicine. There will also be annual general meetings of the International EPR Society and the Asia Pacific EPR Society. A tentative schedule is available download Conference Program
You are invited to take part in a Workshop on Multifrequency EPR: Applications to Complex Systems during the afternoon of Sunday 13th July 2008, immediately preceding APES2008. The workshop has been designed around a series of introductory lectures intended to provide researchers and graduate students some basic insights into various important emerging areas of Multifrequency EPR. The lectures will be teaching sessions, illustrated by a few current research results, but definitely different from the usual conference research presentations.download Workshop Overview
Special Issue
It is planned to publish a special issue of the journal Applied Magnetic Resonance with contributions to the APES2008 conference. Guest editors will be Professors Davies, Hanson and Schenk.
The contributions should be original papers prepared according to Instructions to Authors to be found at Instructions to AuthorsThe manuscripts should be submitted during the registration. They will undergo the standard refereeing procedure by two referees and be returned to authors before the end of the meeting.
APES Young Scientists' Award
Participants at APES 2008 who have held a PhD degree for less than five years will be eligible to apply for a YOUNG SCIENTISTS’ AWARD.
Applicants are asked to provide a curriculum vitae including a list of publications and the names of three referees who may be consulted by the Selection Committee.
Awards will be made for excellence involving electron paramagnetic resonance in any field covered by physics, materials science, chemistry, biology and medicine.
It is proposed to make two awards of $AUD1000 towards expenses involved in attending APES 2008. The Awardees will also be presented with a Certificate and a Citation describing the work for which the award has been made.
The Selection Committee reserves the right to make no award.
Applications should reach Professor Graeme Hanson, Centre Magnetic Resonance, University of Queensland, St. Lucia, Queensland, Australia 4072 by 1st June 2008. Submissions may also be made electronically to graeme.hanson@cmr.uq.edu.au
